Design tip 004

Finding the right comforter

1. Your sleeping warmth level:  Are you generally a hot or a cold sleeper?
What is the average room temperature when you are asleep?

2. Once determining this, you can choose different type of comforters:
 ■ Down comforter
 ■ Down alternative comforter
 ■ Silk comforter.

3. Down comforter by far is the most popular choice, it’s soft and snuggly.
There are three variables to consider: fill weight, fill power and the
   construction of the comforter.
   ■ Fill weight is simply the amount, in ounces, of down fill inside the
comforter. The more down, the warmer the comforter.
   ■ Fill power is a measure of the loft, or fluffiness, of the down. Higher
fill power means higher loft and greater insulating properties. Therefore,
a down comforter with a high fill power requires less fill weight to retain
warmth. "Fill power" is how we can quantify or describe the quality of
different grades of goose down. For example: 750 fill is composed of larger
down clusters then 650 fill, and will fill more space (750 cubic inches, vs.
650 cubic inches) with the same amount of weight. This means, for example,
that a 44oz 750 Queen Size Autumn comforter will be fluffier and warmer than
   a 44oz 650 Queen Size Autumn comforter.
   ■ Construction of the down comforter. There are two main categories:
   baffle-box design, and sewn-through stitching.
   ■ Sewn-through box stitching is a typical quilting; it contains the down fill
in individual compartments to prevent shifting of the down and to minimize
cold spots. However, sewn-through stitching can prevent the down from attaining
its highest loft; and the stitching lines themselves are effectively cold areas.
   ■ Baffle-box construction is a more labor intensive and, therefore, a usually
more expensive option. Baffles are strips of fabric, 1 to 1 1/2 inch wide,
that are sewn into the inside of the comforter and form vertical walls between
the top and bottom of the cover. Baffle walls allow the down fill to attain
higher loft, creating a fluffier appearance and optimizing the down\'s natural
properties. The down fill cannot shift or be moved between individual baffle
boxes, thus are particularly effective at preventing cold spots.

4. Silk Comforter:
   ■ inhospitable to dust mites, is a light fiber that provides warmth without bulk.
Silk is a porous fiber which breaths.  It is natural hypoallergenic.
   ■ Silk comforter is made out of mulberry silk floss,   it should not have rough
or uneven empty spots.  It should not have excessive quilting.
   ■ high quality silk comforters feel soft, smooth, have good buoyancy and incredibly
   huggable.
   ■ Unlike down comforter, the fiber doesn’t shift, no cold spots to worry.

5. Down alternative comforter:
   ■ with down-like softness made out of polyester fill. It is machine washable
and non-allergenic, an alternative to silk which can be too warm for some people.
Down alternative comforter is light weight and yet cooler than silk comforter.
